Twin Peaks is a somewhat obscure TV series that draws on detective fiction tropes but mixes it with psychological horror in a way that is iconic. And better yet, it uses offbeat style characters, music and side-effects in a way that maximises the feeling of dread.
Set in a small mountain town on the US and Canadian border, it follows the discovery of a corpse wrapped in plastic sheeting, and a teenager wondering in the woods, badly injured and hurt. That’s when the local sheriff and an FBI agent begin to investigate. The story then focuses on the town dealing with the crisis and on the two investigators as they work towards finding the truth. However that’s not so easy as the town has a lot of secrets…
I’m currently about half-way into the first season and a lot of things have already happened. Tensions are high and old wounds in the town are being opened into festering sores as the town struggles with the events of the murder and their repercussions. Characters are also having waking dreams of strange things – events that they can’t possibly know. And even the FBI agent has dreamed of something weird – has he learned about a mastermind who is behind what’s happening?
Either way, with this TV show’s use of goofy campy scenes like where someone is enjoying a selection of donuts or messing up their parent’s business plans, to surreal scenes and psychological horror that send shivers down your spine is something you have to watch. Seriously, it’s good!
