Isolation is a great tool in horror. Locations that are not easy to access and where help is not available really pushes the characters to their limits. And asks the question, what are they willing to do to survive?
The Thing is set in Antarctica, a location that is a world away from help and asks the question, in the form of an entity that consumes and attacks in a very alien way. And it really hits hard. People living at a US research station are forced to confront that when it enters the midst and they accidently shoot the messenger from another research base. Who, let’s be honest is acting a little strange and dangerous with a rifle that they got from somewhere.
They then do the smart thing. They send a pilot and some crew members to check out the site and find a place devoid of life. Oh and an excavation site where they find a strange piece of metal. Probably nothing to worry about right? After this discovery, things start to escalate over a cold polar night that never ends.
Because the monster is something truly alien, paranoia and fear starts to set in. And apart from using a range of methods to detect it things get worse. I’ll leave that to your imagination, and won’t spoil the ending.
TLDR: Things get nasty, people make tough decisions and they have no one to consult for help. And the ending is fantastic for a horror movie enthusiast.
The Thing is also the first movie in John Carpenter’s unofficial apocalypse trilogy. Followed by Prince of Darkness and Into the Mouth of Madness, these are must-watch titles for those who like horror.
