The X-Files – Media Review

Some TV shows become a classic for a reason. Even when multiple shows begin to replicate what made it a success, it’s still relevant in our complicated modern world. And can act as great inspiration for various stories and role-playing games alike.

The X-Files is a science fiction drama series which follows the investigations of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, agents of the FBI’s paranormal cases division – The X-Files. The two FBI agents work on unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena, often putting their reputations on the line to learn the truth. Mostly it’s a monster of the week series focusing on alien abductions, folklore and urban legend like the Jersey Devil and supernatural events such as individuals with physic abilities. Also the agents often cleverly interact with often ignored groups like conspiracy groups or those not in the mainstream to learn vital clues and learn what’s going on.

It’s also something that is relevant in our daily lives. Often you get the impression that the truth is being obscured in some way such as in the media or government, thanks to people not digging into the truth or not reporting on what actually happened. The X-Files cleverly show that in the form of various branches of the US Government, whenever Mulder and Scully have to deal with the bureaucracy, unbelieving public servants or when they fixate on on using a creature or entity for profit or other unethical purposes.

From a role-playing perspective the game provides loads of inspiration. In particular it is often used as a resource is great for Delta Green. Focusing on government coverups and conspiracies within the US there is a reason that people associate the X-Files with Delta Green – even though the game is much darker (like True Detective). Outside of Delta Green, cosmic horror games can use the mysteries within by changing the enemies faced with cosmic entities… even when some of the mysteries in X-Files hit that spot such as with the Mi-Go.

For those trying to tell a story, the X-files with its 45-50 minute format is great for short stories. The plots and creatures involved can easily be scaled up or altered for creative stories. Also the sceptic and believer duo is great inspiration for characters that are well fleshed out, while providing plenty of opportunities for them to get on each other’s nerves – while discovering a hidden truth from their different investigative styles. Some plots in The X-Files can easily be explored in the future or even in the past which makes it great for various genres of storytellers.

The X-Files is a cult classic which is great for role-playing stories and writers alike. Check it out if you’re looking for new inspiration!
